If you feel sick or uncomfortable, you might seek out a doctor. But what to do if you don't quite know where you fit into this world and you're tired of carrying that burden alone?
I answered strangers' questions on life puzzles at the entrance to the New York City subway at 57th and 8th. A group of strangers had stopped by because they were carrying some deep, meaningful questions that had long gone unanswered, like “why can't I be happier in my life?”
And then I spotted her, who would be my toughest questioner of the day. She was about 6 years old and held her mother's hand as she craned(伸长) her neck to stare at us. Her mother stopped, but the girl hesitated. “It's OK,”I offered. “Do you have a question?” The girl smiled at her mother, then let go of her hand to walk over towards us. She looked me dead in the eye and said, “How do I know I'm real?”
Suddenly I was back in graduate school. Should I talk about the French philosopher Rene Descartes to prove our existence, with the phrase “I think, therefore I am?” Or, mention English philosopher G.E. Moore and his famous “here is one hand, here is the other” to prove the existence of the external world? But then the answer came to me. I remembered that the most important part of philosophy was feeding our sense of wonder. “Close your eyes,” I said. She did. “Well, did you disappear?” She smiled and shook her head, then opened her eyes. “Congratulations, you're real.”
She grinned(露齿而笑) broadly and walked over to her mother, who looked back at us and smiled.
4.Why did the author show up at the entrance of the subway?
A.To take the subway.  B.To look for strangers' help.
C.To offer advice on life puzzles.  D.To help strangers carry their bags.
5.What made the little girl stare at the author?
A.Curiosity.   B.Horror.
C.Excitement.  D.Nervousness.
6.How did the girl find the answer?
A.By hearing a story.  B.By learning philosophy.
C.By referring to others' words.  D.By having a real experience.
7.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Strict and smart.     B.Honest and brave.
C.Clever and helpful.  D.Humorous and sociable.

Every year between May and September, all 54 employees of Basecamp, a Chicagobased web application company, have a short work week:just four days-a total of 32 hours. Also, they usually work five days a week for the rest of the year.
“That's plenty of time to get great work done. This is all we expect and all we want from people,” says Jason Fried,a cofounder. “Working 50,60, or 70plus hours is unnecessary. In fact, if you have to work 50, 60, or 70plus hours a week, there's a management problem.”
The company's summer workload must fit reduced hours, Mr.Fried insists, otherwise the benefits of a shorter week-to recover from work, enjoy time with family and pursue(追求) outside interests-would be undone.
His new research finds that it is not just long hours that are harmful to employees' physical and mental health. It is also the intensity (强度) of work. Moreover, it suggests that intense work harms career prospects. That is because unbearable hours and intensity are in the opposite direction, reducing the quality of the work.
The research concludes that the level of intensity we apply to the work we do is generally “a stronger predictor of unfavorable outcomes than overtime work”.
The research compared people of similar jobs and education levels, and found they were more likely to suffer poorer happiness and worse career prospects, including satisfaction, security and promotion, when they worked at an intense level for long periods.
8.What do we know about Basecamp's fourday work week?
A.It lasts nearly half a year.
B.The work pressure is too high.
C.There are some management problems.
D.Employees work more than 8 hours a day.
9.What does Mr.Fried intend to say in Paragraph 2?
A.Given plenty of time, people can do more.
B.To get work done well needs plenty of time.
C.People can do a job very well in a short work week.
D.A long work week is appropriate for reduced workload.
10.What does the research mentioned in the text want to tell us?
A.Getting much more rest.  B.Improving work quality.
C.Refusing a fiveday work week.  D.Avoiding working too intensely.
11.What can be the best title for this passage?
A.More Work, More Profits   B.Less Work, Less Benefits
C.Shorter Week, Better Reward   D.Longer Hours, Higher Intensity

Young trees don't just grow; they develop a personality and learn more about their environment and how they should best behave in it. They also help each other out whenever there's trouble.
Personality, just as among people, varies among trees. Some are anxious, some bold. On the author's land, there are three oak trees growing close together. One of the oak trees always starts to shed its leaves two weeks earlier than the others. Since they all experience the same temperature, the same soil and the same length of day, such variables can't be the explanation. So what's happening? Well, this tree is simply more careful than the others. Whoever holds on to their leaves longer can do more photosynthesis(光合作用) and store more nutrients. However, the longer a tree keeps its leaves, the higher the risk of injury.
Not only do trees make their own decisions, they also learn from their mistakes. A tree, for example, keeping its leaves too long during one year will never make this mistake again. This leads to several other conclusions:trees must notice the temperature and the length of the day and be able to save their experiences somewhere. Obviously, trees don't have brains, but it is thought that in the sensitive tips of their roots they keep track of information and experiences.
But trees aren't only clever when it comes to caring for themselves. They also support each other whenever there's trouble by giving warnings and even taking care of sick and weak conspecifics with nutrients. For example, one time the author found a very old tree stump. Its insides had rotted a long time ago to topsoil. But the wood on the outside of the stump was still living. How was this possible? Well, the stump was nourished by its neighbors with nutrients from the root system, and had been for at least 400 years!
Why do trees do_such_a_thing? It's simple: it's better together. Trees need the forest; it protects them from storms, provides the right microclimate and warns them of attacks.
12.Why does the author mention the three oak trees?
A.To illustrate trees can learn from experiences.
B.To show trees can make independent decisions.
C.To explain trees are quite supportive to each other.
D.To prove trees have the same personalities as humans.
13.According to the text, which of the following best describes general features of trees?
A.Anxious and bold.  B.Smart and adventurous.
C.Helpful and wellbehaved.  D.Adaptable and supportive.
14.What does the underlined phrase “do such a thing” mean?
A.Give warnings.  B.Offer assistance.
C.Depend on others.  D.Provide nutrients.
15.Where does this text most probably come from?
A.A public lecture.   B.A science book.
C.An experiment report.   D.A travel journal.

Apologizing the Right Way to a Friend
Why are apologies so difficult? Saying you are sorry can be the most difficult thing you do. But we all make mistakes, so you'll probably have an occasion when you need to apologize. Perhaps you had blew up at someone and realized later you reacted poorly. __16__. Whatever the reason, apologizing can help you both heal and move on from the situation.
__17__. First, you acknowledge that you did something wrong. With an apology, you take responsibility for your actions, which allows your friend to forgive you. Second, an apology gives your sincerity as a friend. __18__, but that doesn't mean we still shouldn't apologize.
Now, what are elements of a proper apology? __19__, depending on what the offense was, where it was done, and who you are apologizing to. In general, a good apology should include the following: a request for their attention, an acknowledgment of what happened, sincerity in admitting you did something wrong and the words “I'm sorry” or “I apologize”. Here are things never to say when apologizing. Note that the art of apologizing involves taking responsibility. Never apologize as a way to “shut someone up” when they are saying you hurt their feelings and you don't think you did. __20__, you should talk things through with your friends until you see why they are hurt or how you came across. You'll really need to selfreflect so you can see things from your friend's point of view.
A.When you make your apology in person
B.If you really believe you did nothing wrong
C.Apologies benefit friendships in a variety of ways
D.The way you apologize is going to be slightly different
E.Or maybe you just didn't show support when you needed to
F.Apologizing the right way, however, may take a little practice
G.Sometimes our pals forgive us easily for the minor things we do wrong

Michael sat on the wooden bench outside the house holding a fourleaf clover (四叶草). Michael had believed that fourleaf clovers brought good luck, but he started doubting that kind of power.
Michael was eleven. It had been two months since his mom and dad died in an accident. A widow by the name of Jill adopted him. Michael had a dislike for Jill. Her voice was loud. She also made him do her chores Michael felt not as much as a son to her. He dreamed a lot. He spoke little. He cried secretly. He had even been working on a plan for two weeks to flee the house.
That was, until he heard Jill parking her Honda into the garage.
Michael stuffed the fourleaf clover in his left pocket.  Before he realized it, Jill was standing in front of him, with a small beagle (毕格尔犬) in her hand. She put the beagle down. It ran to Michael and sat on his Nike tennis shoes. Michael knelt down to pet it. After a while, he looked up: “Is the dog for me?”
Jill laughed: “Of course! You are the slowest little boy ever! I've got you a little puppy to make you work faster.”
Michael couldn't see how a beagle would help with his chores, but he thought it would be nice to have a friend. “Give him a name,” Jill said.
Michael thought for a moment. He saw a big, black spot on his back. That's it! Spot! “I'll name him Spot!” Michael announced.
“Spot, Spot, stupid name but it'll do. Now, you'd better clean the bathroom and finish your homework before dinner's ready.”
“Yes, ma'am.”

Michael ran to the bathroom, with Spot by his side.

A
Buyers should prepay any return shipping cost, which will be given back to the buyers after the seller receives the items as long as the items are returned in the same exact condition as when they were delivered.(Para.3)
主句为“Buyers should prepay any return shipping cost”;句中的“which will be given back to the buyers...they were delivered”是which引导的非限制性定语从句,先行词为any return shipping cost;after和as long as分别引导时间状语从句和条件状语从句。
依据Scope部分中的“You didn't contact the seller within the promised time”可知,与此情况相反时是在保证范围内的,即买家在承诺期限内求助是可以享受保证服务的,故选C。
【难句分析】 She grinned(露齿而笑) broadly and walked over to her mother, who looked back at us and smiled.
句中“who looked back at us and smiled”为who引导的非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词her mother,引导词在从句中作主语。
根据第二段第一句“I answered strangers' questions on life puzzles at the entrance to the New York City subway at 57th and 8th”可知,在纽约地铁57号和8号人口处,作者回答陌生人关于生活困惑的问题;据此可知,作者出现在地铁入口是为了给陌生人提供关于解决生活困惑的建议,故C项正确。
根据第三段第二句“She was about 6 years old and held her mother's hand as she craned(伸长) her neck to stare at us”,并结合该段内容可知,小女孩大约6岁,握着妈妈的手,伸长脖子盯着作者看;据此可推知,小女孩对作者感到好奇,所以盯着作者看,故A项正确。
根据第四段中的“‘Close your eyes,’I said. She did.‘Well, did you disappear?’She smiled and shook her head, then opened her eyes.‘Congratulations, you're real.’”
根据第二段中的“Working 50,60,or 70plus hours is unnecessary. In fact, if you have to work 50,60,or 70plus hours a week, there's a management problem.”
Not only do trees make their own decisions, they also learn from their mistakes.
根据第二段第四句“One of the oak trees always starts to shed its leaves two weeks earlier than the others”可知,三棵橡树中,有一棵总比其他两棵先落叶;结合第三段第一句“Not only do trees make their own decisions, they also learn from their mistakes”可知,树木能自己做决定;据此可推知,作者提及三棵橡树旨在说明树木可以自己做决定,故B项正确。
根据第三段第一句“Not only do trees make their own decisions, they also learn from their mistakes”,并结合第三段内容可知,树木不仅能自己做决定,还能从自己的错误中吸取教训;据此可推知,树木适应能力强;根据第四段第一、二句“But trees aren't only clever when it comes to caring for themselves. They also support each other whenever there's trouble by giving warnings and even taking care of sick and weak conspecifics with nutrients”可知,树木不仅善于照顾自己,当遇到困难时,它们会发出警告,相互支持,甚至照顾生病、虚弱的同类;据此可推知,树木之间互帮互助,故D项正确。
根据第四段尾句“Well, the stump was nourished by its neighbors with nutrients from the root system, and had been for at least 400 years!”可知,树桩是由它的邻居从根处给予营养来滋养的;结合第五段第一句“Why do trees do such a thing?”
18.答案与解析:G 根据空后的“but that doesn't mean we still shouldn't apologize”可知,G项“有时我们的朋友轻易地就原谅了我们犯的小错误”符合语境。
19.答案与解析:D 根据空后的“depending on... who you are apologizing to”可知,D项“你道歉的方法要稍微不同”与之衔接自然,故选D项。
20.答案与解析:B 根据空后的“you should talk things through with your friends until you see why they are hurt or how you came across”可知,B项“如果你确实认为你没做错什么”与之联系紧密,故选B项。
21.答案与解析:B 本空后的“instead of receiving presents,he wanted to do some acts of kindness”是作者的朋友提出的请求,那就是不接受礼物,而是做一些善事。
be blessed with“有幸拥有某物”;be burdened with“负重”;be bored with“(对某人/某物)厌倦的”。

Dear Tom,
How is everything going? I'm delighted to know you're coming to China to learn Chinese paintings, hoping to take a short course in my city.
An art school, which is located in the center of the city, is the best choice for you. As I've learned, you'll finish studying Chinese ink landscape painting in six weeks.  What's more, you can both eat and live in the school while studying here. Therefore, you needn't worry about your accommodation. In addition, the school charges a relatively modest fee.
If you have any other questions, please write to me as soon as possible.
Yours ,
Li Hua
【写作指导】 Paragraph 1的开头是“Michael ran to the bathroom, with Spot by his side”,由此可知第一段将会侧重描写Michael和Spot之间发生的故事,如Michael打扫卫生时,有Spot的陪伴等;也可能会提到Michael最终和Spot成为形影不离的好朋友等内容。
Paragraph 1:
Michael ran to the bathroom, with Spot by his side. This time he didn't feel lonely when cleaning, for the little dog was just there accompanying him. It was just a beginning. Now having a friend to play with, Michael didn't even have time to think about his escape plan. Instead, feeding and training Spot became his source of fun. And surprisingly, even Jill's loud voice didn't seem that annoying to him.
Paragraph 2:
Two weeks passed, and everyone could see something changed in Michael. He was happy again. In the school he performed better and made more friends. After a day filled with pleasure, Michael came back to his room with Spot. “Were it not for Spot, I wouldn't lead such a happy life.” He thought to himself. And then inside his left pocket, he found the fourleaf clover, which was considered as an indicator of good luck. He believed in it again.
